What is a Show Cause Hearing?

Going to court for the first time can be quite the anxiety producing event. When one really thinks about it, all the triggers for anxiety are present in the courtroom. First, most people who find themselves in a courtroom for the first time feel completely lost and unable to understand what is going on. I mean, what does it mean to “show cause” anyway?
All kidding aside, a show cause hearing occurs after a party files a petition alleging that the opposing party violated a court order. At the show cause hearing, the judge determines what the facts are after allowing the attorneys to speak on the matter. The main objective of the hearing is to get the party who is not following the court’s order to begin following the order. The court can also order the relief requested by the moving party.
